This week is being observed as India Autism Week all over the country to highlight autism, a disability that impedes communication and social behaviour.
Though latest figures suggest that autism affects one in 500 persons, there is a lack of awareness about autism even among medical professionals. It has meant that a young child with autism may often not receive timely and accurate diagnosis. Early diagnosis and appropriate intervention is crucial to help an autistic child.
Action for Autism, based in Delhi, has played a pioneering role in raising the level of awareness about autism among medical professionals and for providing services for children with autism.
Some of the events organised by Action for Autism included a walk in front of India Gate, flagged off by actress Nandita Das, a one-day national medical conference and a group show of paintings by persons affected with autism.
