DoctorNDTV Survey

Should Smoking be banned?

Smoking poses a serious threat to the health of an individual and places a heavy burden on an overstretched health service and national economy. Not only does it damage the lungs of the smoker causing chronic lung disease, but also leads to cancer and untimely death. In India, about 120 million people smoke. To understand the layman’s take on banning smoking, DoctorNDTV.com conducted a survey and found that more than half the participants (60%) were of the opinion that smoking should be completely banned. An overwhelming majority (95%) felt that smoking should be completely banned in hospitals but not all of these were of the view that the doctors found smoking be severely reprimanded by the Medical Council of India. A greater chunk of the participants (79%) felt that children found smoking in school should be suspended and many (65%) felt that pregnant women found smoking should be punished too.

Just about half the people who took the survey felt that people should have the freedom of choice of whether or not to smoke while a huge number (80%) were of the opinion that the government was not doing enough to ban smoking in public places.

i think the impact of smoking is so harmful on the individual and those around him that banning appears to be the perfect solution. though i personally feel smoking should be banned because no one has a right to make my health vulnerable, it is also not practical because even when states banned alcohol, smuggling increased, so criminalisation will occur. i think an anti-tobacco civil movement is needed to make it infra-dig to smoke. tobacco companies too which make huge profits at the cost of the health of young people should also be penalised heavily.

firstly i don't smoke, but here is my view. smoking should be left to one's choice i.e. after they are majors, if a study is made and also survey shows that out of 120 million 900000 die of smoking related death, how does it matter, what is the problem here, one who smokes sooner or later that individual will know the pros and cons of smoking and inspite of that they don't wish to quit, then you should just leave it at that. if you so interested in helping the society then create sufficent amount of awarness and push the govt to ban smoking in all public places and the punishment should be severe like in thailand, for eg if i'm caught smoking in a hotel then along with me the hotel is fined a huge amount so it makes everybody responsible. come out with such ways and don't waste time showing how many people died, it doesn't matter for a smoker.

smoking is a public nuisance. but smoking is also an individuals choice. so a smoking individual should have social conscience and make sure his/her act does not affect another person. government should make stricter laws regarding smoking in public. pregnant women and babies are the worst affected. basically lot of efforts on awareness needs to be done. most campaigns about smoking involves around cancer and health affects my personal opinion is that campaigns on smoking as a public nuisance should be made. things will only change if every individual gets socially responsible and aware.
