Results of the web survey:
Is gender an issue in selecting a doctor?
|
| The survey on gender preference for doctors shows that the conservative Indian mindset may be changing. For most medical problems, sex of the doctor is not an important factor in selecting a doctor, since overall, nearly half the respondents (51% males and 45% females) answered that the sex of the doctor was unimportant. |

| However, nearly one third of the respondents (34% males and 36% females) preferred to visit a doctor of the same sex. Overall, 18% males and 15% females would prefer to go to the doctor of the opposite sex.
But, female centric problems, like women’s problems, childbirth and breast problems, had a clear bias (82-89%) for female doctors. Also, more people with sexual, urinary or skin problems preferred to visit the doctor of the same sex.
Interestingly, though the majority felt that sex of the child specialist was not important, more people would prefer to go to doctors of the opposite sex for children’s problems.
Also, there was a slight preference for male ophthalmologists (for eye problems) and cardiologists (for heart problems), even though the majority did not consider the sex of the doctor to be very important. |
