The government's proposal to reserve up to 50% seats in top colleges and universities for disadvantaged students, based on caste, led to an almost month long strike by students and resident doctors. DoctorNDTV.com conducted a survey to gauge the public opinion regarding the reservation issue.
Overall, the participants were unanimously against the decision of reservations for OBC (other backward castes) in academic institutions. About 82% felt that such reservations should not be implemented at the undergraduate level while 94% were against reservations at the post-graduate level or for jobs at the faculty level. Ninety-two percent of the respondents were against enforcing caste-based reservations in private hospitals. Moreover, the majority also felt that if at all reservations have to be done, they should be based on economic, rather than caste considerations and the creamy layer be excluded.
